Facade
We started by designing the facade of building first - made from volcanic stone cut in “ranchero” style. An exercise in how few times can you break a stone, to piece a building face together. Heavy, yet light. This type of cut is cultivated in parts of Mexico, where the craft is passed from generation to generation, hand to hand. Later hired for the rest of the building, the volume is perforated with two light wells and a patio, with part of the old building's structure preserved. The ambiance of breaking through a stone, as though in a quarry, continues on the interiors, exploring green cantera stone. 10 apartment units.
